He came to the conclusion that strengthening his capacity to focus under duress was the answer. The Focused Game Method relies heavily on specific goals. After winning the World Championships, he told Tennis Week magazine, "I write out what my ambitions for the year are: what my external goals are, what elements of my game I need to enhance, and I put down certain principles I need to be devoted to as a player." For example, at the beginning of this year, I wrote: I'm going to make myself a difficult opponent to beat. As I trained, I kept reminding myself of that vow. In practice, I don't worry about winning or losing; I focus on becoming a difficult opponent to beat. And if you can concentrate on that objective and make it a reality, you will be successful.
