About Bob Greifeld
Bob Greifeld Biography
When Bob Greifeld took over as CEO of Nasdaq in 2003, the company's core business was running a single equities exchange in the United States. Nasdaq is now a major player in the exchange and technology industries, providing trading, listing, intelligence, and public company services to customers on six continents. Mr. Greifeld has guided Nasdaq through a succession of challenging, creative acquisitions that have broadened the company's global reach across all asset classes. He oversaw the merger of the Exchange and Stockholm-based OMX AB in 2008, as well as the purchases of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, Boston Stock Exchange, and Nord Pool, Europe's biggest power market. In the United States and Europe, Nasdaq owns and runs 26 markets, one clearinghouse, and five central securities depositories. Its technology powers over 70 markets across the world. Forbes magazine awarded Nasdaq "Company of the Year" in January 2009. Nasdaq was also recognized to Fortune Magazine's annual list of 100 Fastest-Growing Businesses in 2009, and it was listed as one of the top-performing companies in the United States as part of the BusinessWeek 50. Mr. Greifeld has been a vocal proponent of upgrading exchanges and financial regulation in order to maintain the capital markets in the United States competitive. He's also urged CEOs to accept smart, contemporary regulation as a part of good corporate governance. Mr. Greifeld has been outspoken on a variety of topics, including long-term US fiscal debt, corporate tax reform, and the country's outdated immigration policies, all of which he sees as detrimental to US innovation and economic success. Mr. Greifeld was an Executive Vice President of SunGard Data Systems, Inc. (“SunGard”) before joining Nasdaq, where he was in charge of all of SunGard's sell-side and buy-side transaction routing operations. Mr. Greifeld joined SunGard in 1999 after Automated Securities Clearance, Inc. (“ASC”) was acquired by SunGard. Mr. Greifeld served as President and Chief Operating Officer of ASC from 1991 until 1999.
