Robert Duane Ballard, a former US Navy officer and a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, is best known for his work in underwater archaeology, particularly maritime archaeology and shipwreck archaeology. He is most recognized for discovering the RMS Titanic, the battleship Bismarck, and the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in 1985, 1989, and 1998.
In 2002, he located the wreckage of John F. Kennedy's PT-109 and paid a visit to Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana, the crew members who were saved. On the E/V Nautilus, Ballard directs ocean exploration.
