About Biyi Bandele
Biyi Bandele Biography
Biyi Bandele is a Nigerian dramatist and writer who lives in London and is noted for his humorous portrayals of African and African-immigrant life. Bandele is one of the most diverse and prolific Nigerian authors residing in the United Kingdom, having dabbled in theatre, journalism, television, cinema, and radio, in addition to the fiction that made him famous. His 1997 translation of fellow Nigerian Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart for the British theatre cemented his status as an essential voice on the post-colonial stage, confirming his role as both a prolific playwright and a diverse author. He has created literary works that reflect his experiences as an immigrant living in modern England, and his plays contain fictitious settings in which people confront social, political, and moral concerns relevant to Nigerian life. His theatrical works are distinguished by sophisticated language that mixes conversational English with African narrative voice rhythms and European absurdist comic methods. For his adaptation of Aphra Behn's seventeenth-century novel Oroonoko, Bandele won the BT Ethnic and Multicultural Award for best play in 2000. Bandele has written plays for the Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as a radio drama and television screenplays. Rain; Marching for Fausa (1993); Resurrections in the Season of the Longest Drought (1994); Two Horsemen (1994); Death Catches the Hunter and Me and the Boys (released in one book, 1995); and Oroonoko, an adaptation of Aphra Behn's seventeenth-century tale of the same name. Brixton Stories, a theatrical version of Bandele's own novel The Street (1999), premiered in 2001 and was released in a single volume alongside his play Happy Birthday Mister Deka in 1999.
