Bishop Gene Robinson Biography

Gene Robinson is an American Progress Senior Fellow. On June 7, 2003, he was elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, after serving as Canon to the Ordinary (assistant to the bishop) for over 18 years. On All Saints Sunday, November 2, 2003, he was ordained a bishop and installed as the Ninth Bishop of New Hampshire on March 7, 2004. Robinson earned a B.A. in American studies and history from the University of the South in 1969. In 1973, he received his M.Div. from the General Theological Seminary in New York and was consecrated deacon, then priest, at Christ Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He is the co-author of three AIDS education curriculum for adolescents and adults, and he has worked on AIDS in both the United States and Africa (Uganda and South Africa). He has also been an outspoken supporter of anti-racism training in the diocese and the larger church. Robinson was instrumental in establishing the Diocese of New Hampshire's close collaboration with the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, advocating for debt relief for the world's most destitute nations, and advocating for socially responsible investment both inside and beyond the church. He has previously served on the Board of the New Hampshire Endowment for Health, which advocates for uninsured people's access to health care, and he is now a trustee of the Church Pension Fund. He is the recipient of two honorary doctorates and several honors from national civil rights groups. His narrative was told in the 2007 feature-length documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So," and his book In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God (Seabury Books, New York) was published in 2008. Robinson has been an outspoken advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people's full civil rights. He has advocated and lobbied for equal legal protection and full civil marriage rights at the state, national, and international levels. Many LGBT groups, including the Human Rights Campaign, Lambda Legal, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, GLAAD, and the Equality Forum, have recognized him for his efforts. On January 18, 2009, Barack Obama invited Robinson to deliver the invocation at the Lincoln Memorial during the inauguration ceremonies of his presidency. God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage, his next book, will be released by Alfred Knopf in the fall of 2012. “Love Free or Die,” a feature-length documentary on Robinson's ministry, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012. Robinson likes cooking and socializing, as well as gardening, music, and the theater. He is the happy grandfather of two grandchildren and the father of two adult daughters. He lives with his spouse, Mark Andrew, who works for the New Hampshire Department of Safety.
