Magnussen was born in New York City and graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts. In 2007 he made his Broadway stage debut in The Ritz starring Rosie Perez.
In 2012 he was cast as Spike in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike premiering at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton NJ prior to its move to Lincoln Center in New York City. It then moved to the John Golden Theatre where it was nominated for 6 Tony Awards.
