Billie Tsien Biography

Lower Manhattan Development Corporation's Director is Mr. Billie Tsien. Billie Tsien earned her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Yale in 1971 and her master's degree in architecture from UCLA in 1977. She worked as a painter and teacher from 1971 to 1975. She has taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Parsons School of Design, Yale University, Harvard Graduate School of Design, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Pennsylvania. She recently shared the Louis I. Kahn chair at Yale University with Tod Williams. Since 1977, she has collaborated with Tod Williams, and the two have been partners since 1986. They have a 17-year-old son and are married. The Spiegel Pool House, Feinberg Hall at Princeton University, the Williams Natatorium at Cranbrook, and the Neurosciences Institute in LaJolla, California are among his widely publicized works. Several residences in New York City, Southampton, and Phoenix, Hereford College, a 525-person dormitory and dining facility at the University of Virginia, a major addition to the Phoenix Art Museum, a science building and aquatic center for The Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, and the Mattin Arts Center at Johns Hopkins University are among the other projects that have been completed. National AIA Honor Awards have been given to the Cranbrook School Natatorium, the Rifkind home, the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, California, and two interior projects. The firm is currently working on The Museum of Folk Art in New York City, a 25,000-seat amphitheater in Guadalajara, an extension to Bowdoin College's Walker Art Museum, a leisure facility for the New York City Housing Authority, and Temple Beth Am in Miami. Work/Life, a monograph published by Monacelli Press, was published in the fall of 2000. Billie Tsien is particularly drawn to work that blurs the lines between art and architecture. She's served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Percent for Art Jury for the Cities of New York and Seattle, and the Wexner Prize, among others. She is a member of the Public Art Fund, the Architectural League, the American Academy in Rome, and the New York Municipal Art Society's board of directors. She shared the Brunner Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters with Tod Williams, as well as the Medal of Honor from the New York City AIA and the Chrysler Award for Design Innovation.
