Bill Shore Biography

Bill Shore is the founder and CEO of Share Our Strength, a nationwide charity dedicated to ending childhood hunger in the United States. Shore launched Share Our Strength in 1984 with the help of his sister Debbie and a $2,000 credit card cash advance. Since then, Share Our Strength has raised and spent more than $315 million in the battle against hunger, garnering support from national leaders in a variety of industries, including governors such as Maryland's Martin O'Malley and Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges. Shore is also the chairman of Community Wealth Ventures, Inc., a for-profit subsidiary of Share Our Strength that provides foundations and nonprofit organizations with strategy and implementation services, partnering with them to formulate and construct novel approaches to growth and sustainability in order to promote social change. Shore worked on former U.S. Senator Gary Hart's (D-Colo.) senate and presidential campaign staffs from 1978 through 1987. Shore was the chief of staff for former U.S. Senator Robert Kerrey, D-Neb., from 1988 until 1991. Shore's works on social transformation include Revolution of the Heart (Riverhead Press, 1995), The Cathedral Within (Random House, 1999), and The Light of Conscience (Random House, 2000). The Imaginations of Unreasonable Men (PublicAffairs, 2010), Shore's most recent book, highlights the entrepreneurial techniques and character characteristics necessary to tackle problems that impact individuals who are voiceless, defenseless, and economically excluded. Shore got his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Shore is a local of Pittsburgh. From 2001 until 2011, Shore was a director of The Timberland Company. In 2005, US News & World Report named him one of America's Best Leaders, and he just received the S. Roger Horchow Award for Greatest Public Service by a Private Citizen. Shore is presently an adviser for the Reynolds Foundation Fellowship program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and has been an adjunct professor at New York University's Stern School of Business.
