Bill Keller Biography

Bill Keller joined The New York Times Magazine and other parts of the newspaper as an op-ed columnist and senior writer in September 2001. He was formerly the newspaper's international editor from June 1995 to 1997, following which he served as managing editor from 1997 to September 2001. From April 1992 to May 1995, he was the chief of The Times' Johannesburg bureau. From December 1986 until October 1991, he worked as a Times journalist in Moscow, the final three years as the newspaper's bureau head. In March 1989, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Soviet Union. Mr. Keller began his career at The New York Times as a domestic journalist in the Washington bureau in April 1984. Mr. Keller had been a correspondent for The Dallas Times Herald since October 1982 before joining The Times. He worked as a reporter for the Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report in Washington from 1980 to 1982, where he covered lobbyists and interest organizations. From July 1970 through March 1979, he worked as a reporter for The Portland Oregonian. Mr. Keller, who was born on January 18, 1949, earned a B.A. from Pomona College in 1970 and finished the Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in July 2000. He is now a member of the Pomona College Board of Trustees. Emma Gilbey is Mr. Keller's wife. Ms. Gilbey is a writer and the author of a Winnie Mandela biography. Tom, Molly, and Alice are his three children.
