Dr. Bharat Balasubramanian, a long-time Daimler AG automotive technology researcher, and development engineer has joined the University of Alabama College of Engineering faculty, bringing decades of industry expertise to the classroom and laboratory. After almost 40 years as a research and development engineer for the Mercedes-Benz brand in Stuttgart, Germany, Balasubramanian resigned earlier this year as vice president of group research and advanced engineering, responsible for product innovations and process technologies. He will be a professor in both the mechanical and electrical and computer engineering departments at the University of Arizona. He was also designated executive director of the Facility for Advanced Vehicle Technologies, or CAVT, a multidisciplinary research center specializing in automotive innovation. “We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Balasubramanian to The University of Alabama's College of Engineering,” said Dr. Charles L. Karr, dean of UA engineering. “His considerable experience in automotive research and development will be extremely beneficial to the University as well as the state of Alabama. “He has been at the forefront of most of the major advances in automotive technology over the past 20 years, and we are excited to have him work with our faculty and students on cutting-edge automotive research and ensuring our graduates are prepared to address the automotive challenges the world will face over the next 20 years,” says the university. Balasubramanian plans to use his expertise at Daimler to help students prepare for careers in the auto sector in Alabama and the Southeast while at the University. After receiving his master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1977, he was recruited full-time as a computational analysis engineer in the CAE department for automatic transmissions and power steering systems. While working at Daimler, he got his Ph.D. from Karlsruhe in 1983. He rose through the ranks of the company's research and development department, eventually being named chief engineer in 1988. He was designated vice president of engineering technologies in Mercedes-Benz passenger car research and development in 1997, and nine years later, he was made vice president of all Mercedes-Benz research and development, overseeing around 1,300 engineers in Germany. Magic Body Control, a technology anticipated in the next series of Mercedes-Benz S-Classes that utilizes cameras and radar to scan the road ahead for bumps, allowing the car to adjust its suspension beforehand for a smoother ride, is a recent invention Balasubramanian helped create. The car's computer also records the surface characteristics of a road in order to generate a road profile. He also directed research into enhanced cruise control and autonomous braking, which allows vehicles to slow down in traffic or brake in advance of unforeseen road intrusions such as people. Aside from his work at Daimler, Balasubramanian has spent the last 20 years teaching at the Technical University of Berlin's School of Automotive Engineering and Railway Technology, where he was honored with the title of honorary professor in 1998.
