When Betty Williams received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, she never completely expected the effect and consequences of being catapulted into the international limelight. Her relentless efforts to bring Northern Ireland's people together and pledge them to peace were only the beginning of a lifelong commitment to working for a more peaceful, just, and compassionate society.
Williams has toured the world for more than 20 years, working with other Nobel Laureates to assess and assist regions where the cause of peace, particularly the safety and well-being of children, is at peril. In 1997, she created World Centers of Compassion for Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing her vision to life.
