Bettany was born and raised in West London. Her parents worked in the theatre, and she learned early on the value and pleasure of sharing thoughts and ideas with a larger audience. Bettany earned a scholarship at Oxford University to study Ancient and Modern History, and she continued her post-graduate research while traveling across the Balkans and Asia Minor.
