About Beth Daniel

Beth Daniel Biography

Beth Daniel won the United States Women's Amateur Golf Championships in 1975 and 1977 as an amateur. She was the leading money winner on the LPGA Tour in 1980, 1981, and 1990 after turning professional, and she placed in the top 10 on the money list twelve times between 1980 and 2003. She was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in 1990. She became the oldest winner of an LPGA Tour event when she won the 2003 BMO Financial Group Canadian Women's Open at the age of 46. She has won 33 championships on the circuit and has been a member of eight Solheim Cup teams since 2005. She's also won one major event, the 1990 LPGA Championship, and finished third in three others. Beth Daniel was an amateur golf sensation who exploded into the LPGA Tour, had years of success, and then went through two big slumps before being inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame. Growing up in a golfing household, Daniel began playing golf at the age of six. The Daniel family was members of the Country Club of Charleston, and Henry Picard, the 1938 Masters champion, was Daniel's first teacher. Daniel rose through the amateur ranks to play for Furman University, where she was a member of one of the finest women's collegiate teams of all time. Daniel, fellow future Hall of Famer Betsy King, and future LPGA players Sherri Turner and Cindy Ferro were also members of the 1976 national championship squad. Daniel won the US Women's Amateur in 1975 and 1977 and was a member of the 1976 and 1978 US Curtis Cup teams (going 4-0 in 1976). She graduated to the LPGA Tour in 1979 after turning pro at the end of 1978. That year, Daniel won the Patty Berg Classic for the first time, and she went on to win the LPGA Rookie of the Year title. Despite Nancy Lopez's dominance over the following five years, Daniel won 13 events, including four in 1980, the year she was awarded LPGA Player of the Year. In 1982, 1990, and 1994, Daniel topped the Tour in victories. Her greatest year was 1990. She won seven times, including the LPGA Championship, which was her only major victory. Daniel, a range rat and feisty competitor notorious for displaying her rage on the course, had two big setbacks along the road. From 1986 through 1988, she went winless, and then again from 1996 until 2002. The slumps were compounded by putting problems and a succession of ailments. She became the oldest champion in Tour history when she won again in 2003, at the age of 46 years, 8 months, and 29 days. And she had outlasted most of her peers on the LPGA Tour, including King, Patty Sheehan, and Amy Alcott. In 2005, she began to reduce her schedule, and in 2007, she only participated in five tournaments. She was also an assistant captain of the US Solheim Cup team that year, and she was elected captain of the American team in 2009.
