Benoit D.G. AMS Biography

Benoit Ams is a well-known specialist in doing business in Asia, a best-selling author in China, and a successful entrepreneur. Benoit worked for the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sydney after an early banking career in London in the 1990s (Australia). For his efforts to promote "Made in Belgium" lifestyle goods in Australia, he was named "Laureate of the Prize of the Ministry of Foreign Trade." He later worked as a management consultant for a number of companies, including Delvaux, a Belgian luxury brand. As part of the EU-China JMTP initiative, he was then given the scholarship to study for 15 months at the famous Beijing Foreign Studies University (Beijing, People's Republic of China). He then established a countrywide premium food distribution firm, headquartered in Shanghai with offices in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, to represent Inbev and Kraft's specialty brands portfolio in China. Until 2007, he was the company's manager for more than five years. He got a thorough knowledge of the nuances of Chinese corporate culture over the course of these five years. His best-selling books "Les Nouvelles Pratiques du Business en Chine" and "Doing Business in China" are inspired by his experiences as a Chinese entrepreneur. Benoit founded eco-luxury products company Smith & Norbu in Hong Kong in 2008, inspired by his enthusiasm for Tibet and timeless design and craftsmanship, as well as his socially responsible business philosophy. Since then, he has designed spectacles made from sustainably produced buffalo and yak horn for a number of well-known celebrities, including actors, singers, top models, and TV hosts, as well as well-known entrepreneurs. Benoit has also worked in Asia for many years in the fields of negotiation and conflict resolution and has special experience in cross-cultural issues. In 2015, he received certification as a mediator from the HKIAC and the HKMAAL. He is also a member of the International Chamber of Commerce's mediator list (Paris, France). He's also interested in multicultural corporate governance and has served on numerous boards as an independent director or board observer. He was named a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors in 2014. (HKIoD). Benoit is also a former director of the EU-China Managers Association and a former advisor to the European Commission. Benoit has a Master's degree from Brussels' Solvay Business School, a higher education teaching certificate from the University of Brussels, a professional diploma from Beijing Foreign Language University, and certificates in Luxury Marketing and Philosophy from SDA Bocconi (Milan) and Ecole Centrale (Paris). He is based in Hong Kong and speaks Mandarin Chinese, English, and French in addition to his native tongue.
