Dr. Benjamin Franklin Chavis, Jr. was born in Oxford, North Carolina, and is an African American civil rights pioneer. Chavis was an aide to Martin Luther King, Jr. when he was younger, and he was motivated to work in the civil rights movement by him.

Chavis rose to worldwide attention at the age of 24 as the leader of the Wilmington Ten, a group of civil rights activists accused of arson. Chavis was sentenced to 34 years in jail after the entire group was convicted.
