Benjamin Bernie" Dunlap" Biography

Wofford College's 10th President, Benjamin Bernard Dunlap, was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and Harvard University as a graduate student after graduating summa cum laude from Sewanee: The University of the South in 1959. He received his Ph.D. in English Language and Literature in 1967. He held academic positions at Harvard and the University of South Carolina from that year until 1993 when he received the USC Teacher of the Year Award and the university's Russell Award for Distinguished Scholarship. He was a part of the inaugural class of US-Japan Leadership Fellows in Tokyo and twice served as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer in Bangkok, Thailand, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, during that period. He took a post as the Chapman Family Professor in the Humanities at Wofford College in 1993, which he currently retains. He was named the 10th president of Wofford College, a tiny liberal arts college in South Carolina, in 2000. He announced his resignation as Wofford's President this year, telling the institution's board of trustees that he plans to take a year off after leaving the position and then return to the campus as a professor. Literature, intellectual history, Asian studies, cinema history and criticism, fiction writing, and the arts are among Dunlap's academic specialties. He has taught and talked extensively on those and other topics, including leadership and higher education, both in the United States and internationally, including an appearance as one of the Fifty Remarkable People at the 2007 TED Conference in Monterey. A frequent moderator for the Aspen Institute's Executive and C.E.O. Seminars, as well as the Henry Crown Fellowship and affiliate programs such as the Executive Seminar Asia, Faculty Seminars at Wye, the Aspen-Rodel Fellowship, the Africa Leadership Initiative, and the Central European Leadership Initiative, among others. He's also created and led seminars for companies including Netflix, Young & Rubicam, the Waters Global Forum, the Nova Chemical Corporation, and the Arab Banking Corporation across Europe, Africa, and the United States. Poems, essays, anthologies, manuals, and opera libretti are among Dunlap's many works, as are two novels in progress. He has been a significant contributor to over 200 programs for which he has received several national and international honors, and he was a soloist and lead dancer with the Columbia City Ballet for four and a half years in the 1970s and 1980s. He has been married to Anne Boyd Dunlap since 1963. They are the parents of three adult children. His alma institution, Sewanee: The University of the South, bestowed an honorary degree on him in 2006.
