Ben Fry Biography

Ben Fry is the founder and CEO of Fathom, a Boston-based design, and software firm. He earned his doctorate from the MIT Media Laboratory's Aesthetics + Computation Group, where he worked on integrating areas including computer science, statistics, graphic design, and data visualization to better comprehend information. After finishing his thesis, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard alongside Eric Lander, developing methods for visualizing genetic data. Ben was the Nierenberg Chair of Design for the Carnegie Mellon Academic of Design during the 2007 school year. In 2011, he received the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Interaction Design. He is presently working on Processing with UCLA's Casey Reas, an open-source programming environment for teaching computational design and drawing interactive media software that received the Prix Ars Electronica's Golden Nica in 2005. The Tokyo Type Director's Club awarded the project the 2005 Interactive Design prize. The Rockefeller Foundation awarded Fry a New Media Fellowship in 2006 to help fund the project. The 2006 Cooper-Hewitt Design Triennial included Processing as well. Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists was released by MIT Press in 2007, and Getting Started with Processing was published by O'Reilly and MAKE in 2010. Processing 1.0 was launched in November 2008, and tens of thousands of users use it on a weekly basis. The Whitney Biennial in 2002 and the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial in 2003 both included Fry's own work. Other works have been seen at the New York Museum of Modern Art (2001, 2008), Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria (2000, 2002, 2005), and in the movies Minority Report and The Hulk. His infographics have also been used to illustrate stories for publications such as Nature and New York Magazine.
