Barry Eichengreen is a leading American economist and economic historian, holding the George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Chair as Distinguished Professor of Economics and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his A.B. from UC Santa Cruz and multiple degrees from Yale University, including a Ph.D. in economics. His research spans international monetary systems, exchange rates, capital flows, the gold standard, the Great Depression, European integration and the euro, Asian financial markets, China's global role, and IMF policies. Some of his works include “Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression” (1992), “Globalizing Capital” (1996), and recent titles such as “Money Beyond Borders: Global Currencies from Croesus to Crypto” (2026). He advised the IMF as Senior Policy Advisor (1997–98), is a Research Associate at NBER, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Distinguished Fellow of the AEA (2022), and remains influential in global finance and crises.
