Dying of diabetes kidney failure and heart problems Barbara’s father Joe Yourshaw went into hospice where he planned to die peacefully. He had done everything right: completed his advance directive signed a do-not-resuscitate order and designated his daughter Barbara Mancini –herself a registered nurse–his healthcare proxy. He was ready to die – at home.
Instead his daughter Barbara endured a yearlong nightmare of legal persecution for having simply handed her suffering father his prescribed morphine which he took. After being revived against his wishes Joe spent his final days in a hospital prevented from seeing his daughter while still conscious and knowing she was facing jail time for caring for him. Today Barbara advocates on behalf of death with dignity.
