Barbara Kellerman Biography

At Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, Barbara Kellerman is the James MacGregor Burns Lecturer in Public Leadership. She served as the Founding Executive Director of the Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership from 2000 to 2003, and as the Center Research Director from 2003 to 2006. Professorships at Fordham, Tufts, Fairleigh Dickinson, George Washington, and Uppsala Universities have all been held by Kellerman. She was also the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of Leadership at the University of Maryland's Academy of Leadership. Kellerman graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a B.A. and went on to Yale University for her M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Political Science (1975). She received three Fulbright grants and a Danforth Fellowship. She was the Fulbright Chair in American Studies at Uppsala from 1996 to 1997. Kellerman is the author and editor of several publications, including Leadership: Multidisciplinary Perspectives, The Political Presidency: Practice of Leadership, and Reinventing Leadership: Making the Connection Between Politics and Business. She has been on CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, NPR, Reuters, and the BBC, and has published essays and reviews in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and Harvard Business Review, among others. Her most recent books include Bad Leadership: What It Is, How It Happens, and Why It Matters (2004); Women & Leadership: State of Play and Strategies for Change (2007), which she co-edited with Deborah Rhode; and Followership: How Followers are Creating Change and Changing Leaders, which she co-edited with Deborah Rhode (2008). Kellerman has spoken to audiences in Berlin, London, Moscow, Rome, Sao Paolo, Shanghai, Zurich, Jerusalem, Turin, Toronto, and Montreal in recent years. She serves on the Leadership Research Network's Advisory Board, the White House Leadership Project Report's Advisory Panel, Leadership Quarterly's editorial board, and the International Leadership Association's Publications Committee. Forbes.com named her one of the Top 50 Business Thinkers in 2009, and Leadership Excellence named her one of the top 15 of the top 100 leaders in the world (2008-2009). Leadership: Essential Selections on Power, Authority, and Influence, her next book, will be released by McGraw-Hill in April 2010, and she will be a Visiting Professor of Leadership at Dartmouth in the Fall of 2010.
