Barbara Davilman Biography

Barbara Davilman is a writer, a successful entrepreneur, and the Producer of NBC's reality show Starting Over. Davilman started her own successful greeting card company, Bittersweet Cards, before entering the entertainment world. She has also written two Lifetime TV movies. Davilman's career in the entertainment world began very unusually, as a receptionist at a boutique advertising firm in New York. It was here that she made her first attempt at writing. Davilman remained late one evening because he was bored and wrote a radio advertisement for one of the agency's customers. It was a smash once she anonymously dropped it in the creative director's mailbox. Soon after, Davilman founded Bittersweet Cards, a greeting card company specializing in one-line cards with pithy remarks about relationships. Davilman started the business after her partner abandoned her and she was seeking a short message to deliver. She thought that other individuals in similar situations could be feeling the same way. The funny sentiments on the one-line cards were sold all over the world. After several years of writing one-line cards, Davilman was ready for a new challenge, so she submitted a pilot screenplay for a chance to attend the AFI/NBC TV Comedy Writers Workshop. Davilman was accepted into the program as one of just ten writers, and she was up and running. She relocated to Los Angeles, where she was employed as a staff writer on a new comedy by Michael Leeson, one of The Cosby Show's co-creators. Davilman created scores of screenplays for the Lifetime Network, including My Mother the Spy, starring Dyan Cannon, and The Best is Yet to Come, produced by Jonathan Prince, creator of American Dreams. She subsequently transitioned to reality television, where she presently works as a producer on NBC's Starting Over. Davilman also co-wrote two books with her colleague Ellis Weiner, Yiddish With Dick and Jane and How to Raise a Jewish Dog.
