Barbara Buchner Biography

Dr. Barbara Buchner is the Executive Director of Climate Policy Initiative's famous Climate Finance program as well as its Global Managing Director. Barbara has been named one of the top 20 women in climate change and one of the top 100 individuals in climate policy. She advises leaders on climate, energy, and land-use investments all around the world. Buchner is the director of the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance (the Lab) and its Brazilian and Indian sister projects. The Lab's public-private strategy seeks for, designs, and tests cutting-edge climate finance instruments that help alternative energy, adaptation, and land use initiatives overcome financial hurdles. In just five years, the Lab's instruments have raised over 2 billion dollars for sustainable development in poor nations. She is also the primary author of CPI's Global Landscape of Climate Finance, which has become the industry standard for tracking climate finance, and Climate Finance in 2013-14 and the USD 100 Billion Goal, a collaborative report with the OECD that was pivotal in the build-up to the Paris Agreement. In addition, in conjunction with the World Bank Group, CLP (China Light & Power), and the OECD, Buchner founded and manages the San Giorgio Group, which brings together important financial institutions actively involved in green, low-emissions finance. Buchner is a frequent speaker on climate policy and finance at high-profile events, including Climate Week, the Climate Finance Ministerial, the World Future Energy Summit, the IRENA Assembly Ministerial Meeting, One Planet Summit, GLOBE Capital, the GCF Private Sector Facility, COP side-events, and the BNEF Future of Energy Summit, among others. She serves on the BCFN Foundation's Advisory Board, the World Economic Forum's Sustainable Energy Innovation Fund's Evaluation Board, and the One Planet Lab, which was founded by President Macron to find creative ideas and initiatives, as well as form new alliances. In 2013, she was elevated to Senior Director, then to Executive Director, then to Global Managing Director in 2020. Barbara previously worked as a Senior Energy and Environment Analyst at the International Energy Agency (IEA) and as a Senior Researcher at the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) in the field of environmental economics, where she was involved in a number of activities related to FEEM's Climate Change Policy and Modelling Unit. She graduated from the University of Graz with a Ph.D. in Economics and spent time as a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
