Banksy is an unidentified English graffiti artist, political activist, and film director. His subversive epigrams and sarcastic street art mix dark humor with graffiti produced in a unique stenciling style. His political and social criticism has been shown on city streets, walls, and bridges all around the world. Banksy's work evolved out of the Bristol underground culture, which featured artist-musician collaborations. His approach has been compared to that of Blek le Rat, who began working with stencils in 1981 in Paris. Banksy claims that 3D, a graffiti artist who subsequently became a founding member of Massive Attack, an English musical group, was an inspiration. Banksy's work is displayed in public places such as walls and self-constructed physical props. Exit Through the Gift Shop, Banksy's first film, was described as the world's first street art catastrophe film and premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. On March 5, 2010, the film was released in the United Kingdom. For the film, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in January 2011. At the 2014 Webby Awards, he was named Person of the Year.
