Azumah Nelson began his career as a no-name fighter in Ghana and rose to become a boxing legend. Nelson debuted in boxing in 1979 as a complete unknown. He had a few fights with little success before taking on WBC world Featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez at Madison Square Garden.
Nelson's status as a boxer soared following the bout, despite his knockout loss, and he established himself as a deserved main contender. Nelson became boxing royalty on December 8, 1984, when he knocked out Wilfredo Gomez to win the WBC world Featherweight championship. Nelson was the champion for three years.
