Ayo Edebiri is an American actress, comedian, writer, and director of Nigerian-Barbadian descent. Raised in Dorchester in a Pentecostal household, her name "Ayo" means "joy" in Yoruba. She found comedy in eighth grade at Boston Latin School and studied dramatic writing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Edebiri’s career took off with stand-up on Comedy Central’s “Up Next” and co-writing “Ayo and Rachel Are Single” (2020). She wrote for “Big Mouth”, voicing Missy, and “The Rundown” with Robin Thede. Her breakout role as Sydney Adamu in FX’s “The Bear” (2022–) earned a 2024 Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG Award.
