Auret van Heerden has worked on labor and human rights issues all around the world for over 40 years. He began his career in South Africa as a student leader and anti-apartheid activist before being driven into exile following long periods of incarceration and abuse.
He was hired by the International Labour Organization in Geneva to work on the Programme of Action against Apartheid until the Mandela government was elected in 1994, and he was designated as the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva's Labour Attache.
