Aureet Van Heerdon Biography

Auret van Heerden has worked on labor and human rights issues all around the world for over 40 years. He began his career in South Africa as a student leader and anti-apartheid activist before being driven into exile following long periods of incarceration and abuse. He was hired by the International Labour Organization in Geneva to work on the Programme of Action against Apartheid until the Mandela government was elected in 1994, and he was designated as the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva's Labour Attache. In 1996, he rejoined the ILO as the Director of the Special Action Programme on Social and Labour Issues in EPZs. In 2001, he became President and CEO of the Fair Labor Association in Washington, DC, where he served for 13 years. His consulting and teaching efforts in the fields of labor relations and human resource management, corporate social responsibility, and business and human rights take him all over the world. Auret also created the Academy for Sustainable Business and collaborates with New York University's Stern School of Business and HEC Lausanne. He is a member of the C&A Foundation's Investment Committee, the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council for Business and Human Rights, and the International Council of the Toy Industry's CARE Program's Board of Directors.
