Aung San Suu Kyi, like Nelson Mandela of South Africa, has become an international symbol of peaceful resistance to oppression. Because of her attempts to bring democracy to military-ruled Burma, the 65-year-old has spent most of the last 20 years in some sort of incarceration.
She was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, a year after her National League for Democracy won an overwhelming win in an election that the junta later invalidated. Francis Sejested, the committee's chairman, described her as an amazing illustration of the power of the helpless.
