Audrey Tang is a Taiwanese politician, free software programmer, and civic hacker who served as Taiwan’s first Minister of Digital Affairs (2022–2024) and the world’s first non-binary cabinet member. A child prodigy with a reported IQ of 180, Tang taught themselves to code at age eight, dropped out of school at 14, and became a prominent figure in the Perl and Haskell programming communities. They founded an IT company at 15 and worked with Apple on Siri’s development. Tang identifies as “post-gender,” accepting any pronouns, and transitioned in 2005. A key figure in the 2014 Sunflower Movement, they joined Taiwan’s government in 2016, promoting digital democracy, transparency, and platforms like vTaiwan. Tang’s initiatives, including Taiwan’s COVID-19 response and election cybersecurity, earned global recognition, including TIME’s 2023 “100 Most Influential People in AI.” They co-authored “Plurality” (2024) and are now Taiwan’s Cyber Ambassador-at-large.
