Athol Fugard is a playwright who has used his words and deeds to fight apartheid in his native South Africa. His plays are nearly usually set in South Africa and deal with current events. Politics, on the other hand, has no bearing on his understanding of people.

And, like Williams, the plays frequently feature dominating female characters. Fugard's anti-apartheid protests landed him in hot water with the South African authorities. The authorities revoked his passport for four years after his play Blood Knot (1961) was staged in England.
