Athol Fugard is a playwright who has used his words and deeds to fight apartheid in his native South Africa. His plays are nearly usually set in South Africa and deal with current events. Politics, on the other hand, has no bearing on his understanding of people. The authorities revoked his passport for four years after his play Blood Knot (1961) was staged in England. Fugard's plays have been staged in South Africa, London (The Royal Court Theatre), and New York on a regular basis. Apprenticeship (up to 1957), Social Realism (1958–1961), Chamber Theatre (1961–1970), Improvised Theatre (1966–1973), and Poetic Symbolism (1966–1973) are the eras in which his plays were written (1975 onwards).
