Ashton Lewis Jr Biography

Ashton Lewis has come a long way since his father sent him to racing school at Sears Point Raceway (now Infineon Raceway) in California when he was 17 years old. Lewis received the opportunity to participate in the Skip Barber Formula Ford Midwestern Series after beginning his racing career in go-karts. Lewis' success came quickly, as he won two games in his rookie season. Lewis dominated the series in its second year, winning 14 of 16 races. Lewis was awarded a Team USA racing scholarship as a result of his achievement, and he competed in the British Formula Ford Championship, finishing 15th out of 176 drivers. Lewis decided to put his road racing career on wait since he had a racing future ahead of him and possibilities to race both in the United States and internationally. Lewis enrolled at Old Dominion University in 1993 to pursue an engineering degree. Lewis was certain that the degree would aid him in his quest for a career in motorsports. Lewis spent his free time racing NASCAR late model stock cars in the Virginia region while he wasn't studying. Lewis was given a project by an engineering professor to construct a late model stock vehicle from the ground up. Lewis built the car with the aid of his brother and current crew chief, Charlie, and rapidly began dominating late model stock car races with it. Lewis continued to drive late model stock cars after graduation, and his family's Lewis Motorsports team competed in numerous NASCAR Busch Series events. In just his fourth career start, a third-place performance at Watkins Glen instantly drew the attention of the NASCAR community. Lewis continued to compete for Lewis Motorsports and other team owners until 2001 when he decided to focus only on Lewis Motorsports. Lewis helped his squad become a top-ten team in the Busch Series during a four-year span (2001-2004), despite being unsponsored for half of that time. Each season, Lewis progressed, and club owners began to notice. Lewis was offered the chance to quit his family's team, but he remained committed to the team his family had fought so hard to develop until the very end. Lewis received a call from Team Rensi Motorsports to pilot the #25 Team Marines Ford in 2005, after the decision to close the doors at the end of the 2004 season. Lewis leaped at the chance and can't wait to drive the Team Marines Ford down Victory Lane and pay tribute to the Marines who have fought for our country's freedom all across the world. I'm really looking forward to driving the Team Marines Ford and giving back to the Marines all across the world, said Lewis. Being picked to drive for Team Rensi Motorsports is a great honor for me. They've shown to be one of the best teams in the Busch Series throughout the years, and I'm definitely looking forward to this season.
