April Hernandez Castillo is an American actress, author, and motivational speaker of Puerto Rican descent. Raised during the crack epidemic, she overcame an abusive teenage relationship and trauma. She gained fame as Eva Benitez in “Freedom Writers” (2007), earning Image Award nominations, and appeared in “Dexter", "Person of Interest”, “Law & Order: SVU”, and “New Amsterdam”.
Starting in stand-up comedy, she transitioned to dramatic roles. As a TEDx speaker and author of “Embracing Me” (2021), she shares her story of resilience, addressing postpartum depression and promoting healthy relationships at venues such as Harvard and youth centers. She advocates for survivors of intimate partner violence through IMPACTtruth and is a strong mental health advocate.
