Anthony Ray Hinton is an American activist, writer, and author who was wrongfully convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast-food restaurant managers in Birmingham, Alabama. Sentenced to death, he spent 30 years on death row, mostly in solitary confinement, before his exoneration in 2015. The U.S.
Supreme Court overturned his conviction in 2014, citing ineffective counsel, as his original defense attorney failed to secure a qualified ballistics expert. New forensic evidence showed the bullets from the crime scenes did not match Hinton’s mother’s gun, the only evidence against him. Released on April 3, 2015, Hinton became the 152nd person exonerated from U.S. death row since 1973.
