Lisa Fernandez's father is a Cuban immigrant who used to play baseball. He met Lisa's mother, who had come from Puerto Rico, and married her in New York. In the streets, Lisa's mother and brother played stickball, a type of Ghetto baseball played with a broomstick and a rubber ball.
Despite the fact that Lisa was a strong student in school, it was only natural for her to develop a passion for baseball with the support of both of her parents. She began playing when she was eight years old, in 1979.
