Desai grew up as an only kid in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In Raleigh, North Carolina, he attended Fuller GT Magnet Elementary School. Both of his parents work in North Carolina's Research Triangle. Nalini, his mother, is a scientist with a Ph.D. in molecular biology, and Manoj, his father, is a software engineer who creates computer software.
Desai was born in India, while his mother, who is also of Indian heritage, was born in South Africa. Desai played the character Raj on the WRAL-TV (NC Triangle) television children's show CentralXpress.com in the 1990s. The show was nominated for seven regional Emmys, two national Iris Awards, and a national Gabriel Award.
