About Ann Beattie
Ann Beattie Biography
Ann Beattie (born September 8, 1947 in Washington, D.C., United States), is an American writer of short stories and novels whose protagonists, having grown up in the 1960s, sometimes struggle to adapt to the cultural norms of subsequent generations. Beattie earned a bachelor's degree in 1969 from American University in Washington, D.C., and a master's degree in 1970 from the University of Connecticut. Beginning in the early 1970s, her short tales were published in The New Yorker and other literary journals. Distortions, her debut collection of short tales, was released in 1976. Chilly Scenes of Winter, her debut novel, was also published in 1976; it was later turned into the film Head over Heels (1979), which was then rereleased as Chilly Scenes of Winter (1982). Beattie's protagonists are often passive, alienated individuals who are unable to escape unpleasant professions and lives. Beattie describes their unfulfilling existence in cold, unemotional writing. There is minimal analysis of motive in her early works, but the complexity of her characters grows in her later works. Typically, there is no historical context. Beattie's pared-down style has been both lauded and condemned, with some comparing it to Ernest Hemingway's minimalism. Secrets and Surprises (1978), The Burning House (1982), Where You'll Find Me, and Other Stories (1986), Park City (1998), Perfect Recall (2001), Follies (2005), and The State We're In: Maine Stories (2015) are other collections of her stories, all of which chronicle the vagaries of human attempts at communication and connection. Falling in Place (1980) and Picturing Will (1981) are two further works by the author (1989). Another You (1995) is about a cynical English professor and his unfaithful wife, and My Life, Starring Dara Falcon (1997) is about a young lady in a dead-end marriage and a manipulative wannabe actress. The impact of a horrible father and an alcoholic mother on their adult children is depicted in The Doctor's House (2002). Mrs. Nixon (2011), Beattie's unusual book, recreated the life of first lady Pat Nixon while simultaneously discussing the craft of writing. Her other works include the spooky children's book Spectacles (1985) and Alex Katz (1987), a collection of art criticism articles.
