Beattie earned a bachelor's degree in 1969 from American University in Washington, D.C., and a master's degree in 1970 from the University of Connecticut. Beginning in the early 1970s, her short tales were published in The New Yorker and other literary journals. Distortions, her debut collection of short tales, was released in 1976.
