Irons recently defeated a strong field of locals and prominent WCT pros to win his fourth Vans Triple Crown title, which included victories at Haleiwa and the famed Pipeline Masters. From the beginning, the Irons family has made their home in Kauai's beautiful tropical location.

Phil Irons moved to New York City from California in 1970 and married his wife Danielle in 1976. Brother Bruce, Andy's boyhood sparring buddy and an equally accomplished surfer, is only a year younger than Andy. Iron's home between journeys is Kauai, with its pure waters and remote beauty.

The hardship of leaving such a lovely environment for some of the world's less-than-ideal locations is an ongoing problem. Trying to concentrate under situations far harsher than those seen at home has long been a problem for Hawaiians, particularly those from Kauai.

Irons had no trouble climbing to the top of his NSSA class during the early 1990s as an amateur, and he had no trouble seeing the globe. He dominated at the Nationals at Lowers. Irons got his first taste of the big leagues while still in high school, during the 1996 HIC Pipeline Pro.

He won the tournament in dangerous surf, defeating Derek Ho and Shane Beschen in the final, as well as 16-year-old Bruce in the semis. Irons became an overnight sensation, with a slew of contract offers and a significant fan base. Irons qualified for the WCT the following season in 1997.

While most of his first season was a wash, he was on top of the world for two weeks in July. He won back-to-back competitions in the sand at Huntington Beach, the six-star G-Shock US Open (a major qualifying), and the Op Pro.

As he began his assault on Oahu's West Side to win the Billabong World Junior Champion, credible sources predicted Irons to be the next world champion. He appeared to have arrived.

MCD, his main sponsor, created a video profile called Raw Irons, and Bruce, his younger brother, was putting pressure on him from below with his own Pipe Masters finals spot. Despite all the fanfare, Irons was unable to requalify for the WCT in 1999.

Following a pair of seeded surfers' retirements, Andy was back in the chase in 2000, getting into the Top 16 towards the end of the year courtesy to an outstanding win in the Billabong Pro at Trestles.

Irons overcame Slater to win the trials and was on his way to winning the tournament when the surf worsened at Gotcha's Tahiti Pro. He waxed Slater once again at Pipe, setting down the gauntlet for the previous champ in one of the finest heats of the year.

Irons' consistency can't be far behind now that he has experience and confidence on his side, which is bad news for the rest of the tour.
