He began his career opening for legendary Hawaiian comic Frank DeLima and soon found himself in Booga Booga, Hawaii's premier sketch comedy troupe, replacing the late Rap Riplinger. He went on to do a lot of stand-up comedy on the mainland and in Hawaii after that. Whoopie Boys, Man Called Sarge, and Aloha Summer is among Bumatai's cinematic credits.
He released several comedy CDs. His first prize was for Most Promising Artist, and he proceeded to win three more Hoku awards for Best Comedy Performance. Andy Bumatai also developed a number of KGMB-TV TV specials, including School Daze and All in the Ohana.
