Allen Hammond Biography

Al Hammond is the World Resources Institute's Vice President of Innovation and Special Projects, where he is in charge of accelerating and, at times, directing the creation of new projects, initiatives, and technologies. He also oversees the World Resources Institute's Development Through Enterprise initiative, which collaborates with foundations, development agencies, and a number of big businesses to advance the use of pro-poor business practices and digital technology in development. Dr. Hammond has authored several publications in scientific, policy research, and business journals, including recent works in Foreign Affairs (“Digitally Empowered Development,” March 2001), the Harvard Business Review (“Serving the World's Poor, Profitably,” September 2002), and Foreign Policy (Selling To the Poor,, May-June, 2004). Which World? : Scenarios for the Twenty-First Century, his most recent book, was released in 1998. Dr. Hammond holds engineering and applied mathematics degrees from Stanford University and Harvard University. Prior to joining WRI, he founded and edited several national publications, including Science 80-86 (published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science), Issues in Science and Technology (published by the National Academy of Science), and the Information Please Environmental Almanac (published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science) (published by Houghton-Mifflin). In addition, he had a daily radio show for five years (which was syndicated nationwide by CBS) and wrote or edited eleven books. Dr. Hammond has received several national magazine prizes as well as other journalistic distinctions. Dr. Hammond has written extensively in the scientific and policy research literature, spoken worldwide, and worked as a consultant to the White House science office, numerous government agencies in the United States, the United Nations, and several private foundations. He enjoys skiing and sailing tiny boats, among other things.
