Alfredo Jaar was born in 1956 in Santiago, Chile. He attended Santiago's Instituto Chileno-Norteamericano de Cultura (1979) and Santiago's Universidad de Chile (1980). (1981). Jaar investigates the public's desensitization to pictures and the limits of art to portray catastrophes like genocides, epidemics, and famines through installations, photos, videos, and community-based initiatives.
Military conflicts, political corruption, and power disparities between industrialized and developing countries are all shown in Jaar's art. His work covers topics such as the Rwandan genocide, gold mining in Brazil, toxic waste in Nigeria, and border concerns between Mexico and the United States.
