Alec Mapa received his big break in the Broadway production of M. Butterfly, where he was cast to understudy and eventually replace B. D. Wong. Mapa went on to play the part in the national tour.
In 1992, Mapa made her Broadway comeback in an adaptation of Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallières' L'Hôtel du libre échange, renamed A Little Hotel on the Side. I Remember Mapa, a one-man show about his experiences growing up homosexual in San Francisco, was written and performed by him.
