Alan Major was the men's basketball coach for the Charlotte 49ers. Major worked with Thad Matta at Ohio State and Xavier colleges for nine years before becoming the 49ers' coach. He graduated from Purdue University in 1992. During his college years at Purdue, Major worked as a student manager for Gene Keady.
Major worked as an assistant coach at Cal Lutheran, a Division III school, after graduating in 1992, and then at University of the Pacific for three years under Bob Thomason, the all-time Big West Conference victories leader. Before returning to Pacific, he spent one season on the staff of fellow Purdue alumni Bruce Weber, from 1998 to 1999.
