Bonatti, RĂ©buffat, and Desmaison, three of the most famous rock climbers of all time, were his heroes as a youngster. Alain Robert grew up surrounded by their lyrical, epic experiences. He chose to pursue a career as a top climber, but his parents were not supportive of his ambition.
He didn't want them to know that as a boy scout, he began learning the fundamentals of climbing. To become a climber like his heroes, he learned how to move and manipulate ropes. He climbed eight stories when he was 12 and returned home through the window since he had forgotten his key. His parents had given up hope.
