In the 1970s, Al Bernstein contributed to Ring Magazine and Boxing Illustrated. He was the managing editor of Lerner Newspapers in Chicago from 1974 until 1979. In 1980, he published Boxing for Beginners, an instructional and historical book on the sport. In 1980, Bernstein joined ESPN as a boxing analyst.

Bernstein's debut album, My Very Own Songs, was released in 1988 and featured original songs about television and sports. He began his career as a live stage performer with a musical performance at Caesars Palace. Bernstein was the boxing analyst for NBC's coverage of the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
