Ajahn Brahmavamso Mahathera (also known as Ajahn Brahm) was born Peter Betts on August 7, 1951, in London, United Kingdom. He was born into a working-class family and received a scholarship at Cambridge University to study theoretical physics in the late 1960s.
He taught high school for a year after graduating from Cambridge before heading to Thailand to train as a monk with the Venerable Ajahn Chah Bodhinyana Mahathera.
