Mann and Berklee classmate and boyfriend Michael Hausman co-founded the new wave band 'Til Tuesday in 1983. (who went on to manage her solo career). The band's debut album, Voices Carry, was released in 1985, and the title tune was inspired by the relationship of the band's guitarist, Robert Holmes, with his wife.
It was named Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards. Welcome Home, the band's second album, was released in 1986. She performed vocals alongside Geddy Lee on Rush's track Time Stand Still from their 1987 album Hold Your Fire in 1987. She also appeared in the song's music video.
