Adrian Matejka is a poet of African descent. He earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Cave Canem Workshop, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Lannan Foundation, and United States Artists have all given him fellowships. The Big Smoke, his most recent collection of poetry, was released by Penguin in 2013 and is about Jack Johnson.

It was a National Book Award finalist in 2013 and a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2014, and it earned an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award.
