Adam Tooze is a British historian and professor at Columbia University, where he holds the Shelby Cullom Davis Chair and directs the European Institute. Educated at King’s College, Cambridge, with a B.A., and the London School of Economics, earning a Ph.D., he grew up in England and Heidelberg, Germany. A nonresident scholar at Carnegie Europe, Tooze writes for major publications like the Financial Times and London Review of Books. Renowned for his work in economic and twentieth-century history, Tooze previously taught at Cambridge and Yale, succeeding Paul Kennedy as Director of International Security Studies at Yale’s MacMillan Center. His books, including “The Wages of Destruction” (2006), “The Deluge” (2014), “Crashed” (2018), and ‘Shutdown” (2021), explore global economic crises and power dynamics, earning awards like the Wolfson and Longman History Prizes.
