Abby Stein Biography

Abby Stein is a Jewish activist, educator, writer, and speaker. She is the 10th generation of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidic Judaism, and was born and reared in a Hasidic family of rabbinic heritage. Abby went to Yeshiva and graduated with a rabbinical degree in 2011. She left the Hasidic community in 2012 to pursue other worldviews. In 2015, Abby came out as a transgender woman. She has worked to promote support and awareness for trans rights and people leaving Ultra-Orthodoxy since coming out. Her tale has been featured in the New York Times, New York Post, WSJ, New York Magazine, Jewish Daily Forward, Daily Mail, NBC, Vogue, InStyle, and other publications, as well as on CNN, Fox News, HuffPost Live, ShowTime, NowThis, PopSugar, and other national and international outlets. Abby was selected as one of The Jewish Week's "36 Under 36" young Jews who are making a difference in the world in 2016. She is presently a Columbia University student studying gender studies and political science.
