A.O. Scott wanted to be a rock critic since he was a kid. He worked as a book critic after dropping out of graduate school, and when The New York Times recruited him in 2000, he became a film critic by mistake.
In 2004, the publication doubled down on that strange choice by naming him chief film critic, a role he now shares with Manohla Dargis. Mr. Scott has continued to dabble in literary criticism for The Book Review (and other publications on occasion) and writes for The Times Magazine whenever he gets the opportunity.
