Curtis James Jackson III, more commonly known as 50 Cent, is a prominent American rapper and actor. He achieved fame with the release of his albums Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003) and The Massacre (2005), which have been certified 8 and 5 times platinum, respectively, by the RIAA and have sold over 15 million and 11 million copies worldwide. Born in South Jamaica, Queens, 50 Cent started selling drugs at 12 during the crack epidemic in the 1980s. Still, he eventually left that life behind to pursue a career in rap music. Billboard magazine has ranked him as the 6th best artist of the 2000-2009 decade, 4th top male artist, and 3rd top rapper. He has also been ranked as the 6th best and most successful Hot 100 Artist and the number one rap artist of the 2000-2009 decade by the magazine. His album Get Rich or Die Tryin' was ranked as the 12th best album, and The Massacre as Billboard's 37th best album of the 2000-2009 decade. His fifth studio album, Black Magic, was released in 2011. 50 Cent established two film production companies, G-Unit Films in 2003 and Cheetah Vision in 2008, the latter of which focuses on producing low-budget action thrillers for foreign film markets. He obtained $200 million in funding for Cheetah Vision in 2010. He later revived G-Unit Films and renamed it G-Unit Films and Television Inc., which has joint ventures with Will Packer Productions and Universal Television. He has sold several projects to different networks, one of which is the STARZ drama series Power, in which he serves as co-star, co-creator, and executive producer. The show received high ratings and was renewed for a second season after its premiere. He also serves as an executive television producer for the SundanceTV series Dream School, which follows 15 high school dropouts taught by celebrity teachers.
